ACP-EU Training Courses on
Fisheries and Biodiversity Management

Background

The Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) has become the centerpiece of global efforts to stem the loss of biodiversity. Most of the ACP countries are Parties to the CBD. The scope of the CBD is broad and contains provisions for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, with fair and equitable sharing of benefits, from agro-ecosystems, forests and from marine/ coastal and freshwaters.

The countries that are Parties to the CBD are seeking to achieve and to demonstrate progress in its implementation. The ACP-EU project on biodiversity and fisheries management can contribute to this by:

• Helping national biodiversity databases to obtain, from databases such as FishBase, historical information as biodiversity benchmarks for comparisons to assess impacts, threats, diversity, abundance, etc.
• Providing information for further research on suitable biodiversity indicators, i.e., monitoring tools to measure changes across time and space.
• Providing training relevant to the development and implementation of national biodiversity strategies and to setting and achieving target for biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and benefit sharing.
